Support Teams

Jenny & Leon Pethick

Leon and I are proud to have the opportunity to support Patricia in her Legacy fund raising bicycle ride from Darwin to Bundaberg.

Both my husband and I had family and extended family serving in the First and Second World wars. Two of our children were in the Armed forces and both served on peace keeping deployment during their service.

In my nursing career spanning 50yrs I have been privileged to spend time with veterans in hospitals and nursing homes who have shared their experiences and related the horror and futility of war. One particular nursing sister, who I will never forget, was at the Western Fron and described the sea of bodies and raised hands that were exposed when the snow and ice thawed in the spring.
Our Nations’ commitment to the ongoing conflicts around the globe will ensure Legacy will be needed to support those who serve and the families of those who make the supreme sacrifice.

We are part of the Baby Boomer support team to support Patricia and her efforts to raise money for a great cause. We met Patsie (as we called her then) in 1990 when I trained as a GP in the orthopaedics ward in Darwin Hospital. Initially terrified by her high standards, all we doctors grew to love her and respect her great determination, her desire to do the best humanly possible in every situation for every patient whether they had a bony injury or a life threatening addiction to petrol sniffing. We admire Patricia’s ability to keep working in such a demanding job and know she’s at her best when the road ahead is challenging.

Both Winston and I, like Patricia, feel passionate about helping those in need. Those returning from war and their families need compassion and support.

Like Patricia I too was affected by war as a child, my Dad fought in New Guinea and his terrified nightmare screams often woke us as children. My first job at 16 was at Repat Hospital where I met returned servicemen and women from the Boer war, WWI and WWII and returned Vietnam veterans. Many men in Winston’s family were involved in each of the wars and all have been deeply affected.
We are all strong at the broken places.

The concept of the Legacy Ride August 2012 has captured my imagination.
Legacy has it’s origins in the Great War 1914—1918 in Gallipoli, Palestine, France and Flanders, and has served and continues to serve the families of fallen soldiers.
To propose a fundraising venture riding a bicycle from Darwin to Bundaberg seeking support for Legacy is an epic journey and proves that age is no barrier to attaining your goals.
During my forty years residing in the Northern Territory I never ceased to be amazed at the involvement in many organizations both Military and Civilian. Legacy has always commanded respect from all.
I am proud to be a member of the support team assisting Patricia and would invite you to be a sponsor as well.

Maurice & Merle Reed
I feel privileged to be in a position to support Patricia in her effort to raise funds for the wonderful organisation Legacy.  On refection in my later years I realise, and am better able to appreciate what a lifesaving support Legacy was to my mother, widowed at age 36 in 1937 with 4 children to feed, clothe and educate without a breadwinner.

At that time Australia was at the tail end of the depression, with the 6 long years of the Second World War about to occur and post war years of recovery to follow.   Life was difficult for all, but especially so for my mother and others in a similar position.  But there was Legacy, giving counsel and practical assistance with our education and for me personally, extensive dental treatment given without charge by one of the Legatees’.

Just as our family needed the support of Legacy over 70 years ago, that support is, and will be needed in years to come, and I urge all who are able to support this highly commendable and practical effort in any way they can.
